Can't really articulate the 'why' of it, but I'm especially drawn to those images wherein you've limited your color palette and simplified or even excised background.

For some reason it pleases me to work in a simplified color range. Don't know why. Though I sometimes also enjoy the sort of "landscape" sketches, piling on color more like a painting or a oil crayon.

i'd agree with sheila on this, however i think you should explore all the aspects of your creative urges with this new toy... and piling on the colour is a great way to learn colour. The portrait of your nephew is good.
hope your trip to california is without incident, but full of event
